Monte Antico Toscana Wine Review

This Monte Antico Toscana 2007 is a Super Tuscan from Italy and comes to us from select Tuscan hillside vineyards in the areas of Maremma, Colline Pisane and Colli Fiorentini.  The wine is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

According to the winemaker, “the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks at 77° F, followed by maceration on the skins for 15-20 days and malolactic for 7 days.

The wine is then aged for one year in oak (80% Slavonian barrels, 20% barriques). All of the barriques are made of French Oak. 10-20% of the barriques are new and the remaining percent are 2nd year barriques.  Finally, the wine is aged in the bottle for 6.”

Monte Antico Toscana Tasting

Monte Antico ToscanaThis twist top wine poured a pleasant ruby and garnet color and was just a little leggy in the glass.  A sheeting action was moreso observed.  The wine had a clean nose of delicate earth and oak aromas.

On the palate, Monte Antico Toscana was dry with a smooth warm oaky flavor combined with light fruits.  Medium body with light flavor intensity.  The mouthfeel was cottony.

Slightly grippy tannins were noted with a finish of medium duration.

Overall, I found Monte Antico Toscana to be a little bland for my tastes.  I’ve tried other Super Tuscans that I thought were a little more robust.  I was expecting this wine to be a little less youthful, as well.  I probably wouldn’t treat this one as a sipper, but perhaps pair with a pasta with a meat sauce.

Price for Monte Antico Toscana about $13.99.
